Bangladesh Squad for Asia Cup 2022
Asia Cup is all set to launch on 27th August 2022 in UAE with the host being Sri Lanka. The tournament will be played in the T20 format as of ICC T20 World Cup coming ahead in October. The six teams Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Qualifier are placed in two groups.
The Bengal Tigers are kept in group B along with Sri Lanka and Afghanistan. The team will play its first match against Afghanistan and after that Sri Lanka on 30 Aug and 1st September respectively.
Bangladesh has announced its squad recently with Shakib Ul Hassan as its new captain. He is not only given the responsibility for this tournament but he will also be leading the team against New Zealand tri-series and ICC T20 World Cup.
Bangladesh could not finalize the squad in the initial timeline given by ACC. The delay in announcing was the selection of the captain himself, as he was in contract with a betting company. He ended up this for the sake of the cricket. Similarly, BCB has asked him to stay as captain for a good time. As BCB has settled the issue of their captain, the chairman of BCB is confident that Shakib will not commit such type of mistake in the future.
Before him, Muahmmdullah was the team captain in Zimbabwe who was later replaced by Nurul Hassan. In the last three T20s, Mussadiq was given captaincy but Bangladesh lost by 2-1.
Bangladesh has announced 17 member squad for the Asia Cup 2022. In other announced members, Sabbir Rehaman is also part o the team. He played in 2019 last time for the Bangla team. In 50 over format Dhaka Premier league, he scored 515 at an average of 39.6. He was sent to West Indies to play for Bangladesh A team. In total, he played 44 T20s and scored 946 till now.
Mushfiq ur Rehman, given rest against Zimbabwe, is now included. Litton (due to his hamstring injury), Shoriful Islam, Munim Shahriar and Najmul Hossain Shanto are not included in the squad.
Nurul despite his finger injury and all-rounder Saifuddin despite his recurring back problem are part of the squad. BCB has kept a close eye on these selected injured players and their availability is subjected to their fitness.
After this tournament, Bangladesh will play a tri-series in Newzealand with the third team being Pakistan. The series will begin on 7th October 2022. It may be the last practice series for the teams before the mega event of ICC T20 World Cup 2022. It will be hosted by Australia in October- November.
